, the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG) at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L.Foster School of Medicine held their second annual Internal Medicine Subspecialty Fair, an event geared towards providing medical students with exposure to the various subspecialties available to them within the field of internal medicine. After expressing interest in a career in cardiology, student Anand Narayanan was asked by cardiologist Dr. Narayanan replied his previous experiences with cardiovascular disease pushed his interest towards the subspecialty.

They were placed in small groups and had the opportunity to meet with various internal medicine subspecialists and learn about their respective fields for a few minutes before rotating to the next subspecialist, in a fashion similar to speed dating. And it is because of this that I want to help other families who have gone through a similar situation.

The subspecialty fair was attended by physicians from the Department of Internal Medicine, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso including Claudia Didia, M. D., (general internal medicine), Zinnia San Juan, M. The IMIG Meet Your Match was a great event and gave me the opportunity to really see what each specialty has to offer and what specialties match my own personal interests,” he said.

After students had the opportunity to meet with each of the physicians, Gordon Woods , M.

D., associate professor of internal medicine and medical education, TTUHSC Paul L.

Foster School of Medicine, instructed a short workshop on how to interpret EKG readings and heart sounds.

A session on interpreting chest x-rays was led by Maureen Francis, M.

D., associate professor of internal medicine and medical education, TTUHSC PLFSOM.

The Paul L Foster IMIG is sponsored by the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Texas ACP chapter.

IMIG student officers say they worked diligently to ensure that the event was a success.

The goal of IMIG is to inform and provide exposure to students to the specialty of internal medicine and its various subspecialties.

“It is wonderful to be able to provide an opportunity for medical students in their preclinical years the opportunity to discuss career options with physicians from various subspecialties within internal medicine,” said Jessica Phillips, a second-year medical student and IMIG officer.

“The students enjoy interacting with the physicians in a relaxed setting where they can ask questions ranging from what prompted the physician to enter their subspecialty, to lifestyle questions, to just gaining more information about what each medical specialty does.
